Business for the Arts has been tracking the state of the arts in Canada since 1974, capturing financial and statistical data on private sector support, public sector funding, employment figures, audience development and new growth areas in the arts.
The annual surveys provide significant insight into the health of non-profit arts and culture organizations in Canada. One of the most interesting aspects of having over thirty years of annual survey data is the long-term trend analysis and benchmarking which so much historical data allows.
The surveys provide value to participating arts organizations with a full survey data CD ROM, analysis on survey results, and access to an on-line benchmarking tool* allowing arts organizations to compare their operating performance against a national average by sector and by discipline.

What is a benchmarking tool?
Benchmarking is the process of comparing a set of data to another that is considered to be a point of reference.
How does it work?
BftA has created a benchmarking tool that will allow organizations to compare their financial data to the national average of organizations of a similar size or discipline. Survey respondents can create custom charts to compare their earned, government and private sector revenue. The survey benchmarking tool illustrates how an organization’s revenue stream compares to others, informing the organization where they have been successful and where improvement can be made.
